I am certainly not the only one who has wanted to reach out to those in the medical community with words of encouragement, however, a couple weeks ago I was inspired to write thank you letters to the physicians who have helped me through several health issues in recent years. While each of them were aware of how grateful I have been for their compassion and kindness before the pandemic, it seemed an especially appropriate time to share some thoughts.
Little did I know one of them would respond to my letter with a hand-written thank you note. Within moments I was in tears as this particular doctor shared simply and humbly of her struggles with worry and anxiety for her patients and the community at large. While she was ever so grateful for supportive family and colleagues [she is in a leadership position], she commented that the words in my letter were exactly what she needed that day; she sensed a renewed energy and hope to persevere.
And then she wrote one little phrase that said it all . . . “God is in control.” Wow. It wasn’t that I couldn’t believe she’d profess that sort of belief, it was that for as well as we’ve gotten to know one another, her vulnerability throughout her note was pure gift to me.
While I may have felt some hesitancy to write to these busy medical professionals, I knew the Spirit was prompting me to follow through. How thankful I am that two human beings could take a few minutes to encourage one another amid the challenges of the daily life we now live.
We may think our small acts of love aren’t that important. Yet when we choose to say yes to those little heart nudges, the Divine can—and does—work miracles of all size and description.
In light of this experience, maybe it won’t take another pandemic for me to write to anyone who has blessed my life or others with their presence.
