The traditional and the contemporary meet in this play. The baby Jesus has just been born. Shepherds and wise men visit him. Then others come calling. Francine, a widow, approaches the manger and hesitantly speaks of her 46 years of married life. As a sign that she now accepts her widowhood, she gives Jesus her wedding ring. Ben, a workaholic businessman and father of two, ruminates on his failures as a father, then gives the baby Jesus pictures of his two young children and asks him to watch over their lives. Michael, a young drug addict, is remorseful about how he’s abused his body. Wanting to come clean, he offers his life. Katherine, a fifty-something businesswoman and adult caretaker, first grapples with her grief over her Alzheimer’s-stricken mother’s approaching death, then experiences peace as she gives her mother to Jesus. |
